Flights to New York from £149 What’s the catch
Travelling to the States could be about to get a whole lot more affordable thanks to a new service from no-frills airline Norwegian
Visit the Big Apple from just £300 return
With flights to New York from just £150, one airline aims to make flying to America as cheap as parts of Europe.
As well as the Big Apple, Norwegian is operating flights to Fort Lauderdale and Los Angeles from the UK– at a fraction of the traditional cost.
However, if you want to get hold of the cheapest tickets, you have to book well in advance and be flexible with travel dates.
Currently, tickets to New York from £149 aren’t available until January 2015 – and that’s just one-way, while flights are only running on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
Furthermore, the flights are only flying out of London Gatwick, so for those living outside the South East travel costs will need to be factored into the equation.
The full costs including extras – how does it compare?
Still, booking a trip New York from 13th January coming back a week later amounts to just £299.20, including taxes. However, if you want to take more than just a carry-on baggage, you’ll have to pay an extra £25 (two bags cost £55).
You also get charged £25 each way if you would like to pick your seat, though you are not obliged to. And it goes without saying that food and drink will cost extra – you can pre-order one of the in-service meals from £20. Or you can do an ‘Add Plus’ package that will include seat booking, meal and a piece of checked baggage for £35.
Payment by MasterCard or Visa credit card is subject to a surcharge of £4, though it can be side-stepped by using a debit card or Bank Norwegian MasterCard.
So it’s entirely possible – though fiddly and requiring you to pack light and eat lighter (or buy food ahead of time) – to get a full flight for less than £300.
By comparison, on the same dates the lowest one-way price from either British Airways, or partner American Airlines, is £283 or a total of £565.31 for a return trip to New York. Again, a slightly higher surcharge of £4.50 is applied to MasterCard and Visa credit cards, but not on debit cards. However, allocated seating, a checked bag and onboard dining is included as standard.
The cheapest direct flight from Virgin on the same date is £342.41 to New York (though a cheaper alternative including a stop in Orlando is available at £323.29) and £176.40 returning, to total £565.31 –oddly the exact same price as British Airways to the penny. Again, a checked piece of luggage, onboard meals and allocated seating comes as standard.
That means flying in advance with Norwegian offers a potential saving of £265. Looking at other dates, if booking in October you can get direct flights one-way from £179, though in September the cheapest ticket is £239.
The cheapest flights from the low-cost carrier to Los Angles start from £199, these can be found as early as November, though they only operate twice a week.
Meanwhile, the cheapest tickets to Fort Lauderdale start at £179, again only operating twice a week, and the earliest dates at this price are in December. But you can get a ticket in September to the sunshine state for just £20 more at £199.
“There’s great demand for high quality flights at a low fare between the UK and the US, particularly to and from London Gatwick, where no other airline currently offers these routes,” said Norwegian’s cheif executive Bjørn Kjos, when announcing the flight routes last year.
Time for a trip to the USA?
It’s not just the flights that are making a trip across the Atlantic tempting. The pound has been strengthening against the dollar in recent months and is now at a six-year high: £1 now equals $1.715.
It means that on the other side of the pond, your money will go a lot further than this time last year.
“Sterling has appreciated more than 12% against the US Dollar in the past 12 months,” commented Simon Phillips, head of retail at travel money specialist No.1 Currency.
“That means £500 will get you $841 today, compared to just $748 this time last year. That’s almost $100 more in your pocket this summer – and that will buy you an awful lot of chilli dogs.
“However, avoid exchanging your currency at the airport, because you will pay for the convenience with very poor rates. For the best rates, order you travel money online in advance.”

10 best foods to boost your energy levels (without expanding your waistline)
10 best foods to boost your energy levels (without expanding your waistline)
admin | March 22, 2015 | Heath | No Comments
Lee Holmes is a Certified Health Coach from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and writer for Healthista.com.
Here, she reveals the best foods to boost your energy levels to avoid that 4pm slump.
In terms of eating for energy, I have seen the best results by living a lifestyle that focuses on eating plenty of fresh, seasonal produce and trying to minimise gluten from my diet.
Listening to your body allows you to decide what is best for you.
If you are feeling tired try a few of my top 10 foods to fight fatigue and see what works for you — it may be one of them or it may be all of them!
I like to use a variety of these so my body does not become reliant on any one product, rather it keeps my body fresh and loving the variety of fuel I am giving it.
Raw nuts are packed with nutrients – and soaking them overnight gives even more of a health benefit
By eating raw, unsalted nuts your body is provided with a high-energy boost packed with nutrients and free from any form of processing.
If possible, try and soak your nuts overnight in water to activate them.
Activated nuts starts the germination or sprouting process, increasing the nutrient value of the nuts and allowing the body to more easily digest them.
Try my Sweet Spiced Nuts from my book Eat Clean, Green and Vegetarian.
Probiotics – good bacteria – in yogurt may indirectly help you fight fatigue. So add yogurt to cereal, breakfast or salads, says Ms Holmes
Add a dollop of natural goat’s milk yogurt to your breakfast, favourite salad or on top of the next curry you make to get a great boost of calcium and huge dose of probiotics.
Probiotics are the good bacteria found in yogurt with can help to facilitate changes in the microflora of the gut and enhance the body’s immune system.
Probiotics help to keep your gut healthy, assisting in digestion, which in turn leads to you getting the most of the food you consume and helping to fight fatigue.
Salmon contains nutrients that help the body get the most energy from the other foods you eat
Salmon is packed with omega-3 fatty acids which have been found to help lower cholesterol, potentially reducing your risk of heart disease.
Not only is it great for the heart, salmon is high in protein, vitamin B6, niacin and riboflavin.
Don’t worry if you don’t have a clue what these last few are. Basically, they help to convert food into energy – giving you a healthy wake up call when you think you are going to fall asleep at your desk.
MUSHROOMS
One cup of mushrooms provides almost 50 per cent of your daily serving of iron – which is essential in transporting oxygen within the bloodstream.
Without an efficient oxygen supply to our major organs, we can often feel fatigued and lethargic.
Consuming mushrooms will boost the level of iron in your body, boosting the cells within the bloods ability to transport oxygen around our body and fuel our organs to function effectively.

SPINACH
Spinach is extremely high in iron, magnesium and potassium.
Magnesium plays a vital role in producing energy, and paired with potassium enables effective digestion in the stomach and the regulation of nerve and muscle function.
Add some fresh spinach to your favourite salad, or serve it wilted with some eggs for breakfast.
If you think you have enough spinach, think again Just keep adding it!
PUMPKIN AND SUNFLOWER SEEDS
Snack on a quarter of a cup of pumpkin seeds and you will get about half the daily recommended amount of magnesium.
Like in spinach, magnesium helps in bone, protein and fatty acid formation, helps to relax muscles and maintain adequate calcium levels.
SWEET POTATOES
My favourite source of carbohydrate, sweet potatoes, contain iron, potassium, magnesium, vitamin C and vitamin D – all of which help to increase energy levels and stop your from feeling tired.
Sweet potatoes are hugely versatile and you can enjoy them mashed, grilled, steamed, roasted, in a salad, by themselves or in a curry.
WATER
Without water there would be no life. Sorry to sound so gloomy!
But water is undeniably the most essential substance on earth and is essential for human to function on a daily basis.
Water is needed to help carry nutrients and oxygen to cells, both of which if are in low supply can lead to fatigue and nausea.
On average its recommended adult women have about eight cups of water per day and men approximately ten cups per day.
One good way to ensure you are getting enough water into your diet is having a glass before every meal.
FRESH, SEASONAL PRODUCE
I could happily talk for days and days about why people should eat seasonally: sustainability, cost, health, environment, nutrient value, flavour, colour… the list goes on.
But when it comes to fighting fatigue, seasonal produce is at its maximum nutrient potential that it could possibly be.
This refers to the total amount of nutrients that a vegetable could ever have.
As the product is stored and transported – which happens when it is not in season – the nutrient potential rapidly decreases.
By eating in season you are getting the biggest reward from the produce and should feel more alert and awake after eating seasonal produce.
When it comes to fighting fatigue, seasonal produce is at its maximum nutrient potential that it could possibly be.
EGGS
Gone are the days of limiting your intake to six eggs per week – I say eat eggs until the cows come home.
Eggs are the highest source of complete protein with eggs providing an impressive 30 per cent of your daily requirement.
They are great to help after exercise to ensure your muscles can recover properly and your body feels fresh for the day ahead.
My curried egg and walnut recipe combines the amazing protein benefits of eggs with the power of nuts. You could also add some extra spinach for some added energy.

Do so-called ‘superfoods’ REALLY boost your health? Trial reveals which ones may be worth the money

- Superfoods are said to have ‘extra’ health benefits – but tend to cost more
- Include blueberries, kale, almonds and quinoa – and sales have soared
- Theory is they help mop up dangerous oxygen molecules in the body
- Trial set out to discover if eating blueberries would have health benefits
- Researchers found levels of ‘stress’ in their bodies were reduced
They are hailed as the key to good health, requiring the minimum of effort.
But do so-called superfoods actually have an added health benefit – or are they simply an easy way to part with cash?
From kale to chia seeds, blueberries to broccoli, these foods are credited with preventing and treating a host of diseases, from dementia to cancer.
Research last year found that 61 per cent of people have bought a food or drink because it had been labelled as a superfood.
Indeed, figures show we’re buying three times more quinoa, spending double the amount on kale and eating three times as many almonds as five years ago.
New research has found that eating blueberries – hailed as a superfood – really can benefit our health
The theory behind superfoods is that they are particularly rich in antioxidant chemicals.
These are said to mop up dangerous oxygen molecules called free radicals, thought to have a hand in everything from ageing to diabetes and cancer.
Now, in a bid to find out if that is the case, one TV show put superfoods under the microscope – with surprising results.
ITV’s Tonight examined the health effects of blueberries, mainly due to their popularity – the British public splashes out £200m a year on them.
The show recruited five ordinary women to test if regularly eating blueberries would have an effect on levels of oxidative stress in the body.
This is the damage caused by free radicals in the body.
In the trial, conducted at Newcastle University, the five women ate two bowls of Canadian wild blueberries every day for eight weeks.
Researchers, led by Professor Mark Birch-Machin, then performed two tests.
In the programme, he explains: ‘The first is really trying to find out how much antioxidant protection you’ve got.
Around 60 per cent of us have bought a food or drink because it was labelled as a superfood. And figures show we’re spending double the amount on kale and eating three times as many almonds as five years ago
‘The second test is really all about the protection of the DNA inside the batteries of our cells.’
Levels of oxidative stress in the women’s bodies were then measures using a test developed by Professor Birch-Machin’s company, PB Bioscience.
This uses finger prick blood samples which are responsive to dietary changes and show how different people respond to an antioxidant rich diet.

Nutritionists reveal what they would eat at McDonald’s…if they had to
Fat, sugar, and calorie-rich fast food is a nutritionist’s worst nightmare, but sometimes there just isn’t another option.
In the cases when hunger kicks in and the Golden Arches beckon, there are better choices than a standard Big Mac with fries and a shake.
Huffington Post recently spoke with ten nutritionists about what they would at McDonald’s and the results are all over the board.
Many of the health experts said they would stick with salads, but others said an indulgence of a chocolate milkshake with fries isn’t the end of the world.
‘I’d get fresh, hot fries (not wimpy cold ones) and a small chocolate shake. Why? If I’m famished, I need “quick energy” which I’ll get from carbohydrates, but also because … I actually enjoy fries and shakes. I wouldn’t worry about nutrition right now because it’s not in the cards. I’d rather get a healthy meal I could savor later, and something quick and enjoyable now,’ nutritionist Rebecca Scritchfield said.
Most of the nutritionists advised opting for side salads instead of fries, and getting grilled meat instead of battered and fried.
Getting protein in the meal was also important, so as not to leave the drive-through hungry.

Is this a miracle cancer vaccine? Scientists hail breakthrough treatment as a ‘game changer’
- Experts find way of teaching body’s immune system to identify cancer cells
- The new medical advance allows patients to be primed to destroy cancers
- In one case, woman given weeks to live cleared of advanced blood cancer
- US patient still alive three years later, and doctors say she is not a one-off
Scientists are having extraordinary success treating cancer with new vaccines they believe could be a ‘game-changer’ in the battle against the disease.
They have worked out how to teach the body’s immune system to identify cancer cells, allowing patients to be primed to destroy cancer.
In one case an American woman given just weeks to live was cleared of advanced blood cancer. She is still alive three years later, and her doctor says she is not a one-off.
British researchers are now working on a related approach.
Both methods involve taking T-cells, which fight infection, and giving them the ability to recognise a special tag on the surface of cancer cells, called the WT1 protein.
The research is being carried out on patients with leukaemia. But the scientists hope their vaccines will eventually be used to fight many types of cancer, including that of breast, bowel and prostate – whose cells tend to have WT1 on their surfaces.
There is even talk of a ‘universal cancer vaccine’ among some scientists, although the researchers themselves believe that is unlikely.
Over the past three years, specialist Guenther Koehne, of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, has treated 15 plasma cell leukaemia patients with T-cells taught to recognie cancer.
The disease can be treated with chemotherapy-like drugs but it tends to keep returning. All 15 were expected to die within months given normal treatment. But following his regime, Dr Koehne revealed ‘about half’ were still alive.
He said: ‘I strongly feel this is a game-changer. Before treatment, I talked to these patients and they said to me: “I have no choice, let’s try this.” They had extremely limited life expectancy. A year later, they call me from work and say they are too busy to see me. That’s really happening.’
His treatment involves taking bone marrow from a donor and splitting it into stem cells and T-cells.
The patient receives the stem cells straight away but the T-cells are sensitised to WT1 in the lab by exposing them to fragments of the protein. The T-cells are then given to the patient in a series of injections over several months.
Dr Koehne’s first patient, graphic designer Ruth Lacey, 64, underwent the procedure in 2012 after being so ill following a relapse and intensive chemotherapy that she was ‘comatose’.
But after receiving the stem cells and four T-cell doses, her cancer was reduced to undetectable levels. Dr Koehne said that seeing her ‘in good health and in complete remission’ was ‘clearly an extraordinary experience’.
In the British study, led by Dr Emma Morris – a haematologist at University College London and the Royal Free Hospital, T-cells from up to 20 patients with acute myeloid leukaemia or chronic myeloid leukaemia are to be extracted, inserted with DNA so they recognise WT1, and then put back again.
‘Most people have immune cells which can’t recognise cancer cells, which is one of the major problems with tackling the disease,’ Dr Morris explained. ‘We have genetically engineered patients’ immune cells so they develop receptors for the WT1 protein, making them much better at recognising leukaemia cells.’
One patient has already received an infusion containing genetically engineered’ T-cells and there are others whose cells are being prepared. The DNA is transferred into the T-cells using a ‘dummy’ virus that does not cause an infection. These then provide the blueprint to build the WT1 receptor.
In the short term, doctors are looking to see if these super-immune cells will be powerful enough to stop leukaemia patients from relapsing after chemotherapy.
But scientists also hope this approach might work to help treat a range of other cancers too.
Dr Morris, whose research with Professor Hans Stauss has been funded by the charity Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research and government body Catapult, said: ‘We could potentially use it in ovarian cancer, breast cancer, and patients with prostate or colon cancer too.’
She said the approach should produce less side effects than chemotherapy and provide longer-term protection than drugs, which are flushed out of the body in days or weeks, because immune cells have a ‘memory’, persisting at low levels in case a threat re-emerges.
The hope is that the genetically engineered T-cells will do this with cancer, said Dr Morris, ‘multiplying again if needed – like an army ready to be reactivated’.
However, Dr Kat Arney of Cancer Research UK, struck a note of caution: ‘These treatments are still in the early stages of clinical trials, and although some people have had great responses, they haven’t worked for everyone.’
